World No.2 Alexander Zverev and American sensation Ben Shelton will join Team Europe and Team World respectively, at this year’s Laver Cup, to be held at the iconic Chase Center in San Francisco, from September 19-21.
With top-level pro men’s tennis returning to the Bay Area for the first time in over a decade, Laver Cup San Francisco promises an unforgettable showdown with an already star-studded lineup. Zverev joins World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz on Team Europe’s six-player roster, while Shelton teams with fellow American and World No.4 Taylor Fritz, last year’s US Open runner up, for Team World.
Zverev is coming off an incredible run at the Australian Open, reaching his third Grand Slam final. The 2021 Olympic gold medalist is a seasoned Laver Cup competitor, having been part of the winning side each of the five times he has participated in Laver Cup competition – in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019), Boston (2021) and Berlin (2024).
“I love being part of the Laver Cup, being teammates with some of the greatest players in the world is very special,” said Zverev. “I’m also really looking forward to San Francisco this year. It is super exciting to be playing at the home of the Golden State Warriors, it will be so cool to play in their arena and experience the atmosphere.”
Team Europe Captain Yannick Noah is delighted to have secured Zverev’s participation.
“Sascha is one of the most consistent and fearless competitors on tour and his experience, leadership and ability to rise to the occasion will be invaluable to us,” said Noah. “We know how tough Team World will be, especially with the home crowd, but with Sascha and Carlos on our side, we’ll be ready for the challenge.”
Shelton, currently ranked No.13 in the PIF ATP Rankings is one of the sport’s fastest-rising stars. The former NCAA College Champion reached his second Grand Slam semifinal at last month’s Australian Open and will compete in his third Laver Cup under the leadership of Team World Captain Andre Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam Champion.
“Laver Cup brings out the best in players – it’s high stakes, high intensity and full of drama,” said Agassi. “Ben is an explosive talent and thrives in this team environment. He’s had a strong start to the season, and I’m focused on building a team that will be ready to take on Europe in September!”
“Nothing compares to Laver Cup,” Shelton added. “It’s electric. The team format, the excitement, the fans – it’s next level. I’m really excited to be playing my third Laver Cup and first in front of an American crowd, I think it’ll be a pretty cool atmosphere in San Francisco and we are pumped and super motivated to win back the Laver Cup!”
Since its inception, the Laver Cup has established itself as one of the most unique and exciting events on the ATP calendar.
Played on a dramatic black court, the three-day competition pits six of the best men’s tennis players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the World. Each player competes in at least one singles match during the first two days, and no more than two during the three-day competition. At least four of the six players must play doubles. Each match win is worth one point on Friday, two points on Saturday, and three points on Sunday, with the first team to reach 13 points winning the Laver Cup.
The three highest ranked players from each region, Europe and the World, based on their ATP singles ranking as of the Monday following Roland-Garros, receive an automatic invitation to play the Laver Cup. If one of these players chooses not to participate, the offer is made to another high ranked player. The remaining three places on each team will be ‘Captain’s Picks’ and can be announced any time before the start of the US Open. By naming Zverev and Shelton to their teams right now, Captains Noah and Agassi are committing to use a Captain’s Pick on them if they do not qualify based on ranking.
With San Francisco set to host its first-ever Laver Cup, and Chase Center – home of the seven-time NBA Champion Golden State Warriors and the Golden State Valkyries – welcoming tennis for the first time, anticipation is at an all-time high. Fans can expect unrivaled matchups, never-before-seen doubles pairings and the world’s biggest tennis stars joining forces as teammates in the ultimate team competition.
