Ballkids Program

Aspiring ballkids will have a shot at a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to be on court with some of the top men’s professional tennis players at the sixth edition of the Laver Cup at Rogers Arena in Vancouver from September 22-24, 2023.

WHO CAN APPLY TO BE A BALLKID?

Anyone 12-16 years of age as of September 22, 2023 is eligible. You don’t need to be a high-level tennis player or have previous ballkid experience, but you should have an interest in tennis and an understanding of the tennis scoring system is recommended.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

Selection Trials

You must register for and participate in one of the two ballkid selection trials for the chance to be selected to the team. The trials will be held in June at two locations in Vancouver. Registration closes on Thursday, June 1 at 12:00pm PDT.

Training Sessions

If you are selected to the team, you will be required to participate in four 2-hour training sessions leading up to the event to equip you with the skills to be a top-tier ballkid.

  1. Saturday, September 9 | 5:30pm – 7:30pm | Coquitlam Tennis Center
  2. Sunday, September 10 | 5:30pm – 7:30pm | Coquitlam Tennis Center
  3. Saturday, September 16 | 10:00am – 12:00pm | University of British Columbia Tennis Centre
  4. Saturday, September 17 | 10:00am – 12:00pm | University of British Columbia Tennis Centre

Orientation Session

If you are selected to the team, you will be required to take part in an orientation and training session on Thursday, September 21 from 11:00am – 2:30pm at Rogers Arena. This will be your first opportunity to be on court with the players as they prepare for their matches.

Match Days

If you are selected to the team, you must be available to work all five sessions across three days of the Laver Cup, September 22-24, 2023 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The event schedule can be found here. Ballkids will be expected to arrive at the arena 90 minutes prior to the match start time.

SELECTION TRIALS: WHEN AND WHERE?

You have the choice of registering for either one of the following trial locations. Each trial will be split into two sessions of approximately 80 minutes each. You only need to participate in one session which will be assigned to you based on the number of applicants for each trial.

Sunday, June 18, 2023 | University of British Columbia Tennis Centre

Session 1 – Check-In: 9:40am | Trial: 9:55am – 11:15am

Session 2 – Check-In: 12:00pm | Trial: 12:15pm – 1:35pm

or

Sunday, June 25, 2023 | North Shore Winter Club

Session 1 – Check-In: 4:40pm | Trial: 4:55pm – 6:15pm

Session 2 – Check-In: 7:00pm | Trial: 7:15pm – 8:35pm

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE SELECTION TRIALS?

Each trial will be run by a team of qualified tennis professionals who will assess the kids on vital ballkid skills including: agility, coordination, balance, speed, endurance and teamwork.

Following each trial, the evaluators will review their assessments and select the top 24 kids to form the Laver Cup Vancouver Ballkid Team. Everyone who participates in the trials will be notified via email on Wednesday, July 5 of the outcome.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR A SELECTION TRIAL?

If you think you have what it takes and can commit to the training and event requirements above, please register for one of the following trials. Registration is free however spots are limited. If the selection trial cap is reached, applicants will be randomly selected to participate. You will be notified on Tuesday, June 6 if you have been selected to participate in the trial and if so, the specific session you have been assigned. Registration closes on Thursday, June 1 at 12:00pm PDT.

If you are one of the 24 kids selected to the Laver Cup Vancouver Ballkid Team, you will share the Laver Cup’s iconic black court with some of the greatest tennis players in the world over three days of incredible tennis along with the following benefits:

  • Official Uniform: You will receive the official Laver Cup Vancouver ballkid uniform from UNIQLO and On;
  • Tickets for Parents/Guardians: You will receive two tickets to a select session allowing your parent/guardian to watch and support you in action;
  • Food & Beverages: Provided to you on the match days in the ballkid lounge at Rogers Arena;
  • Team Photo: A special team photo will be taken on the match court, serving as a lasting memento of your unforgettable experience; and
  • Memories to last a lifetime!

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

All applicants will be required to obtain parent/guardian consent and acceptance of the Laver Cup’s Terms of Participation as part of the registration process.

The Laver Cup is not responsible for any travel or incremental expenses you may incur to attend the selection trial, training sessions, orientation session and/or the match days.
