Overview
Learner Tien is making his Laver Cup debut after a rapid rise up the rankings. The 20-year-old Californian climbed into the world’s top 20 after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open earlier this year and becoming the youngest man to reach the last eight in Melbourne since 2015. The Next Gen ATP Finals champion claimed his maiden ATP title in Metz last year before adding a second title in Geneva in May.

Off Court
Raised in Irvine, California, Learner Tien discovered tennis on his local public courts. The son of real estate attorney and coach Khuong Tien and schoolteacher Huyen Tien, he joined the USTA’s junior development program at age 10. He quickly established himself as one of the country’s leading junior players, winning the USTA Boys’ 18s National Hard Court Championships at just 16 and again at 17. After a semester at the University of Southern California, Tien turned professional in 2023 and now trains with former French Open champion Michael Chang.

Career
Tien defeated Daniil Medvedev at Australian Open 2026 to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. His form continued at Indian Wells, where he upset No.8 Shelton to advance to his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal. He expanded his trophy cabinet by capturing his first career ATP title in Metz in 2025, followed by a second title at the Geneva Open this year, becoming the youngest American male to win a European clay-court tour-level title since 1989. Tien climbed to a career-high ranking of No.15 in July, cementing himself as the No.3-ranked American.
