When Holger Rune steps onto the court at Chase Center in San Francisco this September, he will be doing more than just representing Team Europe at the Laver Cup – he’ll be living out a dream.
“It’s going to be an amazing experience. First time for me playing with the rest of the boys,” Rune said, who was selected to play Laver Cup in 2023, but had to withdraw due to injury. “Growing up, watching Laver Cup with Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray – something like this I wanted to really play one day. I’m super proud and happy that I’m going to do this.”
Now 22 years old, Rune will make his Laver Cup debut alongside teammates Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev under the leadership of first-time Team Europe Captain Yannick Noah. The Danish star joins a prestigious lineup with energy, firepower, and the confidence of a player who has already achieved a lot in a short amount of time.
Currently ranked No.10 in the world, Rune has won five ATP titles, including a Masters 1000 crown in Paris as a teenager – one of the youngest players ever to do so. He also reached the finals at the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters in 2023, and has been a consistent performer at the majors, making quarterfinals at Roland-Garros twice (2022 and 2023) and Wimbledon in 2023.
Uniting with rivals
This season, Rune’s momentum continued with a high-profile win over his longtime rival and friend Carlos Alcaraz in Barcelona, adding another chapter to their exciting rivalry. That chemistry and competitive history will now pivot into camaraderie as the pair unite for Team Europe.
“Carlos and I, we know each other for so, so long. We’ve played many, many times,” Rune said. “Now to be in the same team as him is amazing. He’s possibly the best teammate you could have… He brings exactly what Laver Cup means – all the energy, all the power, the strength, the good vibes for the team.”
Rune, with his bold and aggressive game, thrives on energy – both from the crowd and his team. Known for his passion, on-court intensity, and fearless ball-striking, he’s the kind of player built for the Laver Cup’s unique team format and pressure-cooker atmosphere.
“My goal is to give them a lot of fight, great energy, and hopefully a win,” Rune said. “You don’t just play for yourself; you fight a little extra more because you play for something bigger than yourself. It brings pressure for sure, but also a lot of motivation.”
The Laver Cup is special for precisely that reason. Players who are typically rivals during the year become teammates, supporting one another from the bench and collaborating closely with the captain. The dynamic creates a rare and emotional experience, especially for a first timer like Rune.
“It’s definitely going to be a different feeling,” he said. “Usually many of us guys on the tour are friends, but you don’t share everything. All the guys – I know them very well – they’re super nice, so it’s going to be just great energy. I can’t wait for some good locker-room talk, hopefully some funny stories, and some great tennis.”
Making history
Rune will also be making history. As one of Denmark’s most accomplished male players in the Open Era, his presence in the Laver Cup marks a milestone for the sport in his home country.
As for the host city, Rune admits it’s uncharted territory. “I don’t know much about San Francisco. I’ve never been there,” he said. “I’m just really looking forward to it. I think the fans are going to be pretty intense, and hopefully we’ll get some Europeans over there to support us. What I’ve heard – it’s beautiful, and hopefully it will be a beautiful week.”
Despite his relatively young age, Rune is no stranger to the big stage, and he’s eager to add the Laver Cup to his growing resume of high-impact performances. “In Laver Cup, the energy is unbelievable. You look at the TV and you can kind of feel the energy from the screen,” he said. “We work so hard in the boring practice for these moments, to stand in front of thousands of people and perform. You cannot describe the feeling.”
With his explosive style and competitive fire, Rune is ready to make his presence felt at Laver Cup 2025. His mission is as clear as the sparkle in his eyes. “As a young player, it’s just so exciting to be beside other young players with the same kind of energy, and then there’s beating Team World,” he grins. “That’s the goal.”
