Powerful Spanish shot-maker Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will represent Team Europe at the Laver Cup in Vancouver at Rogers Arena from September 22-24, 2023.
Captain Bjorn Borg has selected the No.25-ranked Spaniard to replace Holger Rune, who has withdrawn due to injury.

“Last year was an amazing team,” Davidovich Fokina said. “I was wondering if some day they are going to call me if I’m doing great on tour. My goal this year was to play more consistent all the year.”

The former Wimbledon junior champion, who turned pro in 2017, has steadily built his ranking on the back of some stunning results on the world stage and achieved a career-best No.21 ranking in August after reaching the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto.

He secured his first win over a top-10 player at the 2021 Monte Carlo Masters against No.10 Matteo Berrettini and went on to reach the quarterfinals.

Again at Monte Carlo in 2022, a second-round victory over Novak Djokovic propelled Davidovich Fokina into his first Masters final, falling to teammate Stefanos Tsitsipas in the title match.

Ranked No.46 at Roland Garros that year, he stunned Casper Ruud in their third-round match en route to a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

In 2023, his ranking continued to improve after quarterfinal finishes at four events, including the ATP Masters at Indian Wells, and the semifinals at Toronto.

Davidovich Fokina joins Stefanos Tsitsipas (5), Andrey Rublev (6), Casper Ruud (9), Hubert Hurkacz (16), Gael Monfils (140) and alternate Arthur Fils (44) on Team Europe’s 2023 lineup.

“You play against the best players in the world at Laver Cup,” he said. “I am excited to be a part of Team Europe, to share the court with other great players and to have them supporting you.”
