The USTA has announced a partnership with the Laver Cup that will see the event take place on American shores in 2018.
The Laver Cup welcomed today’s announcement that the USTA will partner with the newest and most innovative competition in tennis and confirmed the 2018 edition of the event will take place in the United States.
Created by TEAM8, Tennis Australia, and Jorge Paulo Lemann, the Laver Cup will see the top players from Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg, up against a team representing the rest of the world led by John McEnroe.
Both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have thrown their support behind the Laver Cup, committing to represent Team Europe.
“This is a competition unlike any other in world tennis and we are proud to be part of the team bringing it to life,” Tennis Australia President Steve Healy said.
“Having the world’s best players, rivals for most of the year, teaming up to compete under Rod Laver’s name and honor his legacy will be very special.”
“We are pleased to welcome the USTA as a partner and delighted to announce the 2018 Laver Cup will be held in the United States”, TEAM8 CEO Tony Godsick said.
“The USTA, alongside Tennis Australia, will add further experience and resources to the team presenting a competition that will benefit tennis fans around the world.”
“Sports truly transcends borders,” USTA Chairman of the Board and President Katrina Adams said.
“We believe the Laver Cup will become one of the pre-eminent tennis events on the calendar and will bring an exciting new tennis competition to US fans.”
The inaugural Laver Cup will take place at the O2 arena in Prague, Czech Republic, September 22-24. The 2018 Laver Cup will be held in the United States at a site to be determined, and will return to the US on a rotating basis.
