Biography

Overview
Medvedev emerged as a leading next generation player in 2019, when he was runner-up at the US Open, and also reached the final of Australian Open 2021 in between knocking out top 3 players Federer, Nadal and Djokovic to claim the 2020 ATP Finals. In September 2021, he broke through for a maiden Grand Slam singles, defeating Novak Djokovic for the US Open crown. Medvedev returns for a second Laver Cup appearance with Team Europe, having helped his team win the title at TD Garden in Boston three years ago.

Off Court
Aside from his considerable tennis talent, Medvedev has multifaceted interests. He studied physics and maths at a specialized school before enrolling in economics and commerce at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He later dropped out to focus on tennis and became a qualified coach. He also plays harpsichord and guitar and is a talented chess player. He is married to Daria Chernyshkova and is a devoted father to their daughter, Alisa, born in 2022.

Career
Medvedev holds 20 ATP singles titles, including the US Open in 2021 when he won his first major without dropping a set and thwarted Novak Djokovic’s bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam. Nicknamed ‘The Octopus’, he is regarded as a mentally tough competitor who can outsmart his opponents and excels from the back of the court, notably drilling a double-handed backhand.  He has reached six major finals, most recently at Australian Open 2024. He is one of only six men to have scooped six or more ATP Masters 1000 titles alongside Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi and Andy Murray. Medevdev rose to No.1 after he reached the Australian Open 2022 final.
