Overview
Earmarked as a future Hall of Famer for a CV already brimming with accolades, Carlos Alcaraz has cemented his standing in 2024 as the man to beat. The swashbuckling Spaniard makes his Laver Cup debut in Berlin after becoming the youngest player to complete the Channel Slam – winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back. At just 21, he holds 15 ATP Singles titles, including four majors on all surfaces.
Off Court
The second of four brothers, a four-year-old Alcaraz started playing tennis at a club in Murcia, where his father was a coach. At 15, he began training at his current coach and former No.1 Juan Carlos Ferrero’s nearby academy. A passionate supporter of the Spanish football team Real Madrid, Alcaraz delayed his arrival for this year’s Wimbledon Champions’ Dinner so he could watch his team upstage England in the Euros final. His tennis idol is compatriot and former world No.1 Rafael Nadal, who he teamed with in doubles at the Paris Olympics. His favorite movie is Rocky Balboa, and his favorite actor is Will Smith
Career
Alcaraz possesses an all-court game, with exquisite touch, breathtaking power and a never-say-die spirit. His triumph over Alexander Zverev in the Roland Garros 2024 final made him the youngest to secure major titles on three surfaces, almost two years since the then 19-year-old became the youngest man to top the rankings. The only player to deny Novak Djokovic in two Wimbledon finals, his Grand Slam breakthrough came at US Open 2022. Alcaraz fulfilled a dream when he partnered Rafael Nadal in doubles at the Paris Olympics, where he was a silver medallist in singles.
