Overview
Rising American talent Alex Michelsen will make his Team World debut in San Francisco under incoming Captain Andre Agassi. The 21-year-old Californian has enjoyed a strong 2025 season, climbing to a career-high No.30 in July after a semifinal run on the grass in Mallorca. A proven threat on hard courts – his favorite surface – Michelsen has already claimed big-name scalps and brings valuable versatility to Agassi’s squad. He’s also a force in doubles, having lifted the 2022 junior boys’ Wimbledon title with Sebastian Gorzny and reaching the 2024 Cincinnati Masters final alongside Mackenzie McDonald.
Off Court
Michelsen started playing tennis aged two, inspired by his parents Erik, a lawyer, and Sondra, a retired teacher. Both were excellent college players, and Alex hit with his mother almost every day until the age of 16. Alex also loves playing basketball and supports the Los Angeles Lakers. An avid coin collector, he owns more than $10,000 in coins and lists history as his favorite subject.
Career
Michelsen turned pro in 2023 and quickly shot up the rankings, entering the top 50 a year later and breaking into the top 30 in July 2025 after some high-profile wins. He upset No.12-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas and No.19 Karen Khachanov at the Australian Open, then No.61 Norrie at Delray Beach, where he reached the semifinals. Impressive results followed on all surfaces: he won a challenger event in Estoril on clay in April and upset his hero, Gael Monfils, in the first round at Stuttgart. Michelesen toppled Tsitsipas again at Halle on clay, where he also defeated Team World’s Francisco Cerundolo in the first round. A semifinal finish at Mallorca on grass led to Michelsen’s best result of the season at the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto, where he stopped No.10 Lorenzo Musetti en route to the last eight.
