Laver Cup Stars Dominate Final Sprint to Turin

Laver Cup 2024 – Day 1

The lineup for the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals is all but complete following the high-stakes Rolex Paris Masters, and the road to Turin has been shaped, once again, by players with deep Laver Cup ties. Of the seven men already qualified, six have competed for either Team Europe or Team World in recent years.

The race for the year-end No.1 remains open after Jannik Sinner’s triumph in Paris. The PIF ATP Live Race to Turin shows the Italian trailing six-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz (Team Europe 2024, 2025) by just 1050 points, setting up a dramatic finish to the season.

Sinner’s victory over Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Paris final capped an impressive week that saw him account for Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton en route to the title.

For Auger-Aliassime, who played a pivotal role in Team World’s first two Laver Cup triumphs in London and Vancouver, the runner-up finish keeps his Turin hopes alive. Sitting just 160 points shy of the final qualifying spot, the 8th-placed Canadian awaits the outcome of the ATP 250 in Athens.

Team Europe stalwart Alexander Zverev remains a fixture near the top of the standings, consolidating third place after reaching the semifinals in Paris. The defending champion fought past Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) in one of the tournament’s most tightly contested matches — a win that broke a five-match losing streak to the Russian.

“Daniil is kind of my kryptonite, I don’t like playing him,” Zverev said. “He’s somebody who has had my number for the last couple of years. I’m very pleased with the win for sure.”

Zverev’s run ended at the hands of Sinner, who is now targeting both the ATP Finals crown and the year-end top ranking,

American Ben Shelton is also building form. The explosive left-hander, who missed this year’s Laver Cup in San Francisco due to injury, will make his ATP Finals debut in Turin — another milestone for the 22-year-old who was instrumental in Team World’s rise over the past two years.

Another familiar Laver Cup face, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, continued his consistent 2025 campaign by advancing to the Paris quarterfinals. A key member of Andre Agassi’s Team World this season, De Minaur will join the elite field in Turin for the second consecutive year.

He’ll be joined by 2025 Laver Cup teammate Taylor Fritz, who sits sixth in the live race and continues to demonstrate the steady form that has made him a cornerstone of Team World. It marks the first time since 2006 that two American men have qualified for the ATP Finals in the same season.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic — twice a representative for Team Europe, in Chicago 2018 and London 2022 — sits in fourth place. The 38-year-old Serb is competing at the ATP 250 in Athens this week, marking his first career appearance in the Greek capital. Since first qualifying for the ATP Finals in 2007, Djokovic has won the event a record seven times, most recently in 2023.
